Damen builds some of the most widely used tugs in the world, and for good reason. But the path from searching for a damen tugboat to actually operating one is full of decisions that don't show up in the brochure.

1. Standardization is the real product
Damen doesn't build every tug as a one-off. They sell a standard range, built in series. The ASD 2811, for one, is part of a family. That means the gearbox, shaft seals, hydraulic valves, and control systems are shared with other vessels in the class.
Why should you care? Because when a part breaks—and it will break—a standard part is often in stock somewhere. You don't have to pay someone to reverse-engineer a unique design.
In September 2023, we needed a hydraulic oil cooler on a Thursday. The same cooler was already fitted on our sister tug. We didn't have to measure anything or make an adapter. We bought the part, flew it in, and had the tug back in service over the weekend.
That advantage is invisible on a spec sheet.
2. Global support is not just a slogan
Damen has yards and service points that operators can actually use. Schiedam, Harlingen, Vlissingen, Curaçao—these aren't just construction sites. They're part of a support network. For someone who handles emergency jobs, that network is everything.
I once told a supplier we needed a part "as soon as possible." They heard "sometime next week." I've since learned to say: "I need this at the port by Thursday 10:00 A.M. local time." When a part is standard and the supplier knows the class, that kind of deadline is workable.
With a smaller custom yard, you're often the first person to ask for support. They have to figure out what the part even is, then where to get it, then how to send it. That process takes time you don't have when a tug is off hire.
3. Operating costs are where you'll bleed
Here's a number that doesn't appear on the brochure: the cost of the boat sitting still. When a tug is off hire, you still pay crew, insurance, financing, and port fees. Depending on your towage contract, downtime can cost thousands of dollars per day. If you save $200,000 on a cheaper tug and then wait two extra weeks for a non-standard part, your saving is gone.
That's why total cost of ownership matters more than purchase price. Fuel burn, crew training, planned maintenance, parts availability—they all add up. I'd rather buy a standardized, well-supported vessel at a fair price than risk an obscure custom-built tug with a lower sticker price.
Looking back, I should have bought an OEM service contract on day one. At the time, it felt like an unnecessary line item. It wasn't.
One caveat: my experience is mostly with harbor and terminal towing. If you're doing heavy offshore anchor handling or open-ocean escort, your numbers will likely be different. Don't take my pattern and apply it without running your own projections.

- Check the actual configuration. The model name isn't enough. Verify build date, class notation, and any modifications.
- Talk to an operator. Ask what actually breaks, how long parts take, and what the first-year surprises were.
I know that's a lot to keep straight. But a tug is a long-term asset, not a casual purchase. The hours you spend understanding the market before you sign anything are the cheapest hours in the whole process.
An informed customer asks better questions. In my experience, those customers also get better service.
