Scenario 1: The Charter Deadline Is Already Burning

The Hawk case is the perfect example. The client called at 14:00. The steering control was dead, the class survey was booked for 08:00 two days later, and the charterer had a weather window that would close shortly after noon. The normal lead time for the control unit was four weeks. Waiting for a generic exchange unit from multiple brokers was technically an option, but no one would commit to a firm arrival time. “Probably” was the best we got.

We paid a premium—about €2,300 on top of the base €4,800 component price—for a Damen-standardized module through their aftersales network. Scenario 2: You Have a Dry-Dock Window, But No Buffer

The Peregrine case was different. We needed a new hydraulic power unit for a windfarm crew transfer vessel. The vessel was already scheduled for a five-day dry-dock slot. The component was critical, but the failure was not catastrophic—the boat was still running, just with one weakened system. We had time to choose. We went back and forth between a local fabricator and the Damen service centre for almost two days. The local fabricator was 18% cheaper; the Damen team had the exact design file and had installed this unit on sister vessels before.

In the end, we chose the local fabricator to save money. To be fair, the unit worked. But the first version didn't fit perfectly because the old piping had been modified over the years. Then we needed additional hoses and an extra day of fitting. The dry-dock slot was already fixed, so we paid overtime and an extra night charge. For non-critical consumables—filters, lamps, standard valves—a good independent supplier is usually fine. I've seen plenty of non-Damen parts that were perfectly acceptable.

  1. What happens if the repair takes an extra day? If the answer is a penalty, a missed tide, or a lost charter—you're in Scenario 1 or 2.
  2. Is rework feasible without breaking the schedule? If there is no buffer, avoid unproven vendors. The cheapest quote has no value if it pushes you past the class surveyor's availability.
  3. Are you buying a part that needs certification? If yes, the vendor's documentation and traceability matter as much as the part itself. That's not a reason to panic; it's a reason to check.

It took me three years and about forty urgent orders to understand that “fast” and “certain” are different products. Damen is not always the right answer. I've said no to their quotation many times. But when the clock is truly running, and the cost of failure is concrete, paying for certainty is one of the safest decisions I can make. In the end, the scariest phrase in emergency maintenance isn't “expensive.” It's “I think it should arrive on time.”
