If you need a blank-sheet design because your operational profile is genuinely unique—like an ultra-light subsea support vessel for a specific field—then custom is necessary.

Choosing Your Path

Pick Damen's modular approach when: Your requirements fit within standard DP2 or DP1 hull ranges, you need delivery in under 18 months, and you value predictable maintenance and known operating costs. It's also the safer bet if your team doesn't have deep in-house naval architecture to manage the custom process.

Consider fully custom when: You have operating conditions that no existing platform meets—specific ice-class, very shallow draft, unique cargo handling—and you have the budget and timeline (2-3 years) to absorb the risk. Also, if you have an in-house marine engineering team that can manage the project, custom becomes less risky.
  3. The trap I nearly fell into: Assuming "standard" means "low quality." Damen's ships aren't cheaply built—they're efficiently built. The difference is in the engineering hours spent on replicating rather than creating. For 75% of offshore energy applications, that's a feature, not a bug.
