Before I sign off on any vessel or offshore equipment, I run through a simple checklist:
- Define the operating envelope. Not just “cargo capacity” but wave heights, sea state, port depths, and debris conditions.
- Ask the yard for the failure modes. A reliable supplier knows where the design struggles. If they don't, that's a red flag.
- Compare total cost of ownership. Base price, installation, crew training, maintenance, spares, downtime.
- Check parts availability. The benefit of standardization is only real if the parts are actually stocked in the ports you use.

The honest conclusion
There's no “best vessel.” There's only a vessel that fits the mission and one that doesn't. Damen's standard designs are excellent—when you respect their boundaries. And if you're honest about the boundaries from the beginning, you'll find that the straightforward, modular approach can outperform a bespoke alternative on cost, delivery, and reliability.
